How to care for gold, diamond, polki and pearl jewellery
Simple habits that keep fine jewellery beautiful for generations.

Fine jewellery is made to last for generations, but only if it is looked after. Most damage I see at the showroom comes from a few avoidable habits.
How do I clean gold jewellery at home?
Soak plain gold in warm water with a few drops of mild dish soap for ten minutes, brush gently with a soft toothbrush, rinse and dry with a lint-free cloth. Never use toothpaste, bleach or harsh chemicals.
How do I clean diamond jewellery?
The same warm, soapy water works well for diamonds set in gold. Brush gently behind the stone, where oil and lotion collect and make a diamond look dull. Check that the claws are secure; if a stone moves or you hear it rattle, stop wearing the piece and bring it in.
How should I care for polki and kundan jewellery?
Keep it away from water. Polki and kundan stones are often backed with foil, and moisture can seep behind them and dull them permanently. Wipe these pieces with a soft dry cloth after wearing, and keep perfume, hairspray and creams well away.
How do I look after pearls?
Pearls are soft and sensitive to chemicals. Put them on last, after make-up and perfume, and take them off first. Wipe them with a soft cloth after wearing, store them flat, never hang a strand, and have strands restrung every few years.
How should I store fine jewellery?
Separately. Diamonds scratch other stones and gold, so keep each piece in its own soft pouch or lined compartment. Keep polki, kundan and pearls in a dry place, away from humidity.
How often should jewellery be checked?
Once a year, bring your everyday pieces to your jeweller to have the settings and clasps checked and the pieces professionally cleaned. We do this for our clients, and it is the cheapest insurance there is.
