What are making charges on jewellery, and why do they differ?

The part of the price that pays for craftsmanship, and how to compare it fairly.

When two jewellers quote different prices for pieces of the same weight, the difference is almost always in the making charge. Understanding it helps you compare like with like.

What is a making charge?

It is the cost of turning gold into jewellery: the design, the labour of skilled karigars, the setting of stones, the finishing and the inevitable small loss of metal in the process. It is charged on top of the value of the gold and the stones.

How are making charges calculated?

Usually in one of two ways: as a fixed amount per gram of gold, or as a percentage of the gold value. Some jewellers quote a single price for a finished piece. All three are legitimate, as long as the invoice shows clearly what you are paying for.

Why are some making charges much higher?

Because the work is different. A machine-made chain takes minutes. A hand-carved temple necklace or a polki bridal set set in the jadau technique can take a karigar weeks of skilled work. Higher making charges usually reflect more handwork, finer finishing and better design.

Are making charges returned when I sell or exchange?

Generally, no. When old jewellery is exchanged or sold, it is usually valued on its gold content and, separately, its stones. That is why making charges are best thought of as the price of the art in the piece, repaid by years of wearing it.

What else appears on the bill?

GST is charged on jewellery at 3 percent of the value. Stones should be listed and valued separately, with their weight. Ask for the HUID hallmark code to be printed on the invoice too.

A good jeweller will always break the price down for you. If one will not, that tells you something.
